Match Story
Big Sister Liz and Little Sister Dallas
In 2004, Dallas moved away from her parents to live with her grandmother, Shirley. Her grandmother applied to be a part of our program in November of 2004. Dallas was an 11 year old girl looking for the quality one-on-one time that sometimes gets lost in the hustle and bustle of a big family. She was living in Somerset County with her aunt, uncle, three cousins, and grandmother.
Dallas was matched with Big Sister volunteer, Liz. Dallas and Liz hit it off immediately at a Big Brothers Big Sisters event and enjoy various activities together, such as going to the park, watching movies, attending holiday picnics, painting, baking, going out for ice cream, swimming, and going to the beach.
Shirley has said that Liz and Dallas have “a beautiful relationship,” and that even during busier times, you “can’t get them apart.” Since meeting Liz over four years ago, Shirley has seen improvement in Dallas’ attitude and school grades. Dallas admits she is more mature now and has more self confidence.
Liz attended Dallas’ 8th grade graduation and has since helped her with the transition into high school. Liz has said she thinks of Dallas as a real sister and has enjoyed watching her grow up. They have become an essential part of one another’s lives and it is clear that this is one match that will last for years to come. The match between Liz and Dallas is an example of how powerful a Big Brother and Big Sister mentor can be to a child. |
